Fall Organization Checklist for the Pest Free Home

Posted October 23, 2020

Isn’t it amazing the amount of clutter and mess we accumulate throughout the year? That’s why it’s so important (especially in the spring and fall) to spend time organizing, simplifying, and cleaning our spaces. Did you know, keeping your home clean and organized this fall can actually help prevent pests now and in the warmer months? Yep, it’s true! So grab your hot cider and we’ll walk you through 3 things you can do to get organized!

1. Declutter Your Home

Before you can start organizing things in your house, you will want to declutter. Go through your rooms and closets and get rid of things you don’t use anymore. Rodents and other pests are attracted to messy homes. So you’ll be making your house less enticing by getting rid of the junk. Here are some places to go through:

  • Clothing closets
  • Storage rooms
  • Pantry
  • Furnace room
  • Under sinks
  • Bathroom & kitchen cabinets
  • Other closets

2. Clean It All Up

Now that you’ve simplified your space, it’s time to tidy things up! There are often areas of your home that you don’t spend a lot of time in. Because of that, these spots probably aren’t getting cleaned regularly. Making things spick and span is another way to keep pests away, so here are some things to clean that you may not have thought of:

  • Door knobs
  • Fronts of kitchen cabinets
  • Blankets & linens
  • Storage room shelves
  • Under sinks (fix any leaks)
  • Pantry shelves
  • Refrigerator (underneath and behind)
  • Light fixtures
  • Corners & baseboards

3. Holiday Decor Storage Tips

Now that we’ve cleaned and decluttered the rest of the house, let’s talk decorations. Places you store decorations are usually more susceptible to rodents. Think about it, how often do you move around your decoration boxes throughout the year? Not much is our guess. That’s why it’s the perfect place for mice and rats to hide. Here are some things you can do to help keep holiday decor organized this season to not only keep pests away, but also make life easier:

  • Store decorations in sealed plastic bins
  • Label your boxes for easy access
  • Throw away anything you haven’t used in the last 12 months
  • Use small containers and bags to organize within bins

Now that you’ve completed these tasks, you are ready for a stress- and pest-free holiday season! If rodents do still interrupt the festivities, don’t hesitate to give us a call! We are happy to help. You can learn more about our services here
