Are you worried that your pet has fleas? If your poor cat or dog seems to be scratching a lot, it’s very possible they have fleas living in their fur. Pets track these tiny blood suckers inside your home which increases your need to exterminate fleas. Researchers estimate that once you see a single flea on your cat or dog, there may be as many as 100 immature fleas infesting your home. Once you have a flea infestation, it’s extremely hard to get rid of fleas on your own. Fox Pest Control wants you to have peace of mind knowing that your family and pets are safe from fleas.
You might already know you have a flea infestation, but here are a few of the most common signs flea exterminators look for in your area.
Since fleas are most likely to infest a pet, such as a dog or cat, the first sign is finding fleas in their fur. They usually look like little black dots on their skin and in the fur around their necks and tails, on their belly, and in their “armpits.”
Pets with a flea infestation in their fur may scratch excessively. Sometimes, pets scratch so much that they make themselves bleed.
In some cases, pets, while grooming, can ingest fleas that carry eggs from intestinal worms (tapeworms). The worms end up inside your pet’s system. This can lead to excessive salivation and little white flecks around your pet’s anus.
Though more unusually, you’ll know if you have a flea infestation if you see actual fleas jumping around inside your house, usually on carpet, couches, or other furniture.

Although fleas can be prevented by treating your pet regularly with veterinarian-approved treatments, they can still find their way onto your property. Once they’ve invaded your home, it’s incredibly frustrating to get rid of fleas. Frequent vacuuming can help, but ultimately, you’ll want to call Fox Pest Control to make your home safe and comfortable again.
Fleas can carry numerous diseases that can be transmitted to humans, including:
Tularemia
Flea-borne (murine) Typhus
Tungiansis
Bubonic plague
Fleas can cause many problems for pets, including:
Flea-allergy dermatitis (excessive, chronic itching)
Cat-scratch fever (cats can transfer this disease to humans by scratching)
Tapeworms
“IGR” stands for “Insect Growth Regulator,” which acts like an insect hormone that stops fleas from growing properly. It’s one of many effective chemical flea extermination treatments we offer at Fox Pest Control.
Pets with fleas will scratch and bite themselves excessively, even to the point of bleeding. They may also salivate excessively.
Especially if your pet has long or thick fur, check them regularly for fleas. Places fleas are most likely to latch onto a dog or cat are around the ears, near the tail, along the underbelly, and in the “armpits”. Sift through their fur with a flea comb.
Adult fleas are about 1-2 millimeters long and might look like a dark speck.
Fleas can infest a sanitary hotel or cruise cabin just as easily as they can infest a dirty motel. Fleas can infest a clean hotel or a well-kept cruise cabin just as easily as they can invade a dirty motel. Pest professionals often advise people that regular cleaning and vacuuming will help control fleas in their homes as vacuuming helps keep the pests at bay.
Regular vacuuming can get rid of flea eggs that have fallen on the ground, and could pick up flea larvae as well. If you know your pet has had a history of fleas, clean their bedding thoroughly and frequently.
After a flea hatches, it emerges as a worm called a larva (plural: larvae). The larvae wiggle around on the ground looking to eat skin particles and adult flea droppings.
With enough food (blood), an adult flea can live about two or three months on average.
Under normal circumstances, a flea only takes two weeks to go from egg to adult. However, depending on the conditions, flea pupae can live up to a year or more in a dormant state.
