There are countless ways to give back to your community. Since opening in 2012, Fox has given back to communities in 14 different states, across more than 30 branches, plus headquarters in Logan, Utah. Each of the different ways that we’ve given back and supported others has been unique, so when the team at Fox Pest Control’s Lafayette branch learned about The Big Event, an annual, student-led volunteer palooza of sorts, they were instantly committed to sponsoring the event.
The Big Event gives UL Lafayette students the opportunity to volunteer in their community in their own way, providing an opportunity for students to say “thank you” to the local residents and the community that surrounds the institution they attend. Through a variety of service projects, students gain a sense of citizenship and social responsibility, all while promoting a Ragin’ Cajun spirit.
Founded in 1982 at Texas A&M, The Big Event officially launched at University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2013. In the last 9 years, more than 12,500 students have completed more than 1,200 jobs in the communities of Bryan and College Station. And, The Big Event takes place at more than 80 other universities across the nation! Today, The Big Event is the largest one-day, student-run service project in the nation.
This year, The Big Event will be held on Saturday, March 26 from 8:30 to 11:30am. The following projects have already been identified for students to handle: painting and refurbishing, environmental sustainability and beautification, landscaping, school carnivals, 5k run, painting parking lot stripes, organizing storage rooms, craft projects for kids, cleaning, pressure washing, building animal shelters, weeding and mulching, and much more!
More information about The Big Event is available on the web page of the Office of First-Year Experiences.
