Why There Are Roaches In Your Clean Home

Posted January 22, 2021

We know it’s not what you want to hear, but yes, cockroaches can be found in both messy and clean homes. Though keeping things tidy certainly helps deter these pests, it’s not a guaranteed fix.

There are three necessities cockroaches look for when moving in – food, water, and shelter. Let’s walk through each one to help focus on the areas in your home that you might be missing.

Food

If cockroaches were people, they would be everyone’s favorite dinner guest. Cockroaches aren’t picky eaters and love just about anything they can get. Though they are most attracted to things that are sweet, starchy, or greasy, cockroaches will even settle for the things you throw out, including paper products. Yep, they’re attracted to your garbage too. Gross!  With such a wide range of foods cockroaches can eat, it may seem impossible to eliminate their food sources.

Here are a few things you can do to prevent cockroaches:

  • Take the trash out regularly and wipe up any spills inside or outside of the can
  • Keep food in the kitchen when possible, and keep it sealed
  • Clean the grime out of your garbage disposal regularly
  • Keep pet food sealed; whether it’s indoor or outdoor

Water

Cockroaches prefer damp and humid living conditions. You may be unaware of places in your home with this type of environment. Think of places where pipes could leak or water could be trapped.

Here are few of our suggestions:

  • Check that pipes under kitchen and bathroom sinks are tightened
  • Clean out bathroom drains to make sure water flows through easily
  • Fix any leaks that may happen with kitchen or laundry room appliances

Shelter

Cockroaches are cold blooded. When the weather outside cools, cockroaches like to move inside where it’s warm. Homes make the perfect “warm weather” getaway for these pests.  Even if you do not see them as much in the winter, they are still around. The best thing you can do is to take preventive measures to keep them out.

Some examples of these  measures include:

  • Repair damaged weatherstripping on windows and doors
  • Seal up cracks in the foundation and walls
  • Keep storage room items in plastic bins instead of cardboard boxes

These things will help discourage roaches, but a clean house does not mean they will stay away. Once cockroaches are inside, it can be hard to get rid of them. We know it’s frustrating, and we are here to help! Our Pest Pros know just what to do to get rid of cockroaches and other pests.
